What Stimulates Your
Creativity?
A recent
Question of the Week on the "Good Morning
Thinkers" list generated a fascinating range of
responses. The question was "What activities precede
your periods of intense creativity?" Responses
were varied ... from exercise such as walking or jogging
... to taking a nap ... to "strong
psychedelics." Powerful emotions such as being sad
or depressed vied with distracting activities such as
taking a shower or driving as the leading stimuli. Quite
a few people found mowing the lawn a creative turn-on!
Here's a list of some stimulating activities mentioned
by the group. Try one or more of these ideas the next
time you need to stimulate your creativity.
- brainstorming sessions with brilliant people
attending a conference
- spending time with people who make me feel good
- being involved in an activity I love experiencing
beautiful, moving, or otherwise stimulating parts
of the world
- viewing good art work, reading an entertaining
piece of fiction, seeing natural beauty, or going
to a good movie
- long drives
- deep meditation
- visiting a highly-loaded environment (bookstore,
epicurean supply house, antique store, junk yard,
etc.) with a question/problem to be solved in
mind
- scuba diving
- pondering, real genuine pondering
- drifting off to sleep
- vigorous walking in cool air
- reading about some political or financial outrage
in the paper
- weeding the vegetable garden
- boredom
- classical music
- prolonged periods of personal pain or discomfort
- immersion in pictorial images
- putting it in writing
- transcontinental flights
