Innovation University Fellowship Program
By Joyce Wycoff

What are the processes involved with innovation?

Those questions prompted the formation of the Innovation University, a "higher education" branch of the Innovation Network. The first activity of IU was to launch the pilot Fellowship Program in May at the Ford MP&L Team Learning and Creativity Center in Detroit. This year-long, self-directed program is a project- based, intense learning experience.

Each student, guided by a faculty advisor, is responsible for three projects: Kermit -- a "leap" (hence frog ... Kermit -- it made sense at the time and the name stuck) project involving the actual implementation of an innovation initiative; a research project involving some aspect of innovation and a case study of an organization's innovation initiative. Students will meet four times during the year for intensive study of major aspects of innovation and to share project results and presentations.

One of the major projects addressed by the class is the creation of an Integrated Innovation Map. This will be a visual presentation of the entire process of innovation and will be presented to the Innovation Network membership at Convergence 97 in Atlanta.

Students in the first Fellowship Program include: Layne Cannon, Novell; Cynthia Carlisle, Strategies; Laura Donahue, Nestle Frozen Foods; Laurie S. Dunnavant, 3M Health Info.
