Reflecting on the New Year
By Joyce Wycoff
As 1996 closes and we begin to contemplate a
new year, it's a good time to do some rethinking about
our values, our vision, and how we want to spend our
time. Here's some questions to ponder over during the
next few weeks. While the questions are phrased in the
singular, you might want to take one or two and discuss
them with co-workers or with family members.
- What do I feel particularly
proud about that happened in 1996?
- What one thing about 1996
would I change?
- What one thing could I do
differently in 1997 to make it a better year than
1996 has been?
- If I had complete control over
my time, how would I want to spend it?
- Who do I want to spend time
with?
- What are my values and is my
life "value-balanced?"
- If I focused completely on
creativity and relationships, how would it impact
my job or my business?
- What fascinates me right now?
- What question would I like to
find an answer for?
- What's my vision for 1997?
- What are my unique
competencies that I should be focusing more of my
time on?
- What am I doing that someone
else could do as well or better (and therefore I
should be delegating or subcontracting them)?
There's probably a hundred other interesting questions
but it only takes spending some quality reflection time
on a couple to make some significant shifts. Some of
these questions sound simple but require some deep
thinking to find answers. You might want to create a
reflection group to discuss the questions, provide
feedback, and to help each other implement plans which
might grow out of the answers.
Happy 1997!
