Out of the Corral and into the Workplace:
Note: "Join Up" will also be featured during a 50-minute Real
World Roundtable on Weds., March 31 at 10 and 11 a.m.
Do you remember a time when, as a kid, you suggested a game--maybe
camping in your backyard--and all your friends quickly joined in? It
seemed pretty natural that they would want to join you in a fun activity
that would entertain you all. Wouldn't it be great if our projects at
work met with the same enthusiasm? How do you motivate people to want
to "join up" with you at work?
"Join up" is a term coined by the world-famous horse trainer
Monty Roberts, author of the best-selling book
The Man Who Listens to Horses. Through studying wild horses and
their communication, Monty Roberts has perfected a training system that
allows him to start and ride a horse in 30 minutes without trauma or injury
to the horse or trainer. This process differs from conventional horse
training techniques which either take each step so slowly that it requires
6 weeks to start the horse or which "break the horse" in a matter of days
through fear and pain.
Incorporating Roberts' remarkable horse-training techniques, this
workshop will: ![]() Andrea Woodward, Innovation Network; Diana Elliott, Dell Learning, and Greg Furrow, Eli Lilly and Company (l to r) The presenters of this workshop are 1998 graduates of the Innovation University Best Practices Fellowship program: Greg Furrow, Eli Lilly and Company; Diana Elliott, Dell Learning, and Andrea Woodward, Innovation Network. After seeing a demonstration by Monty Roberts at the Innovation Network's Convergence '98 in Santa Barbara, they became intrigued with the question of how "join up," a process designed for building a collaborative relationship with a horse, could be applied to human interactions both in personal and professional life. To investigate this approach, they observed and interviewed Monty Roberts and people in organizations who've taken his message to heart. Then, they applied their learning to their work groups at Eli Lilly and Dell Computers and collected feedback from their colleagues about the effectiveness of the "join up" approach. Join up for this workshop and discuss how to build genuinely collaborative relationships. About the Presenters: Diana Elliott
