Tom Kelley, General Manager, IDEO


Innovation with has always been important to American companies, is now viewed as perhaps the most important organizational success factor by leading business thinkers from Tom Peters to John Kao to Michael Porter. Tom Kelley, General Manager of IDEO Product Developmet, will share the lessons his firm has learned from over 3,000 product innovation programs in computer, telecommunications, technology and consumer products. IDEO believes that any organization can become more creative and more successful by internalizing principles such as:
  • Prototyping the language of innovation

  • A cool company needs hot groups, and

  • Space is the final frontier.
This interactive session will allow Convergence attendees to influence the focus of the talk, while Tom reacts in "real time" to share his remarks to the interests expressed by the group.

Keynote Presenter Tom Kelley's Bio:

Tom Kelley is currently General Manager at IDEO, a firm that helps its clients create innovative products, services and environments. He has previously published articles on design and innovation for publications such as the California Management Review, Design Management Journal, and Japan’s Diamond Design Management Quarterly. Tom is a frequent speaker on managing innovation for U.S., Asian and European audiences, and has appeared on international news programs for BBC Television and Nikkei Satellite News. Tom is currently writing a book on business innovation for Currency/Doubleday.

Prior to joining IDEO, Tom was a management consultant for Towers Perrin, advising senior executives on organizational and operational issues in North America, Asia and Australia. Tom holds an MBA in Marketing from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, where he received the Delbert J. Duncan citation as the year’s top marketing scholar.
