TRIZ: Theory of Innovative Problem Solving

Presented by:
Dr. Ellen Domb, The PQR Group

Vision:

You hang up the phone and think… "Wow, it was great to hear Jimmy’s voice. Has it already been a year since I met him at Convergence 2000? He’s moved from Paris to Sydney, and we’re still connected—thanks to our huge global network of innovative TRIZ thinkers!"

Since learning the TRIZ method of problem solving and ideation, you have become a leader in creativity. People you hardly used to talk to now come to you for help with their tough problems. You’ve even started to multiply creativity by teaching your colleagues the TRIZ method.

Learning Objectives:

  • TRIZ is the Russian acronym for Theory of Innovative Problem Solving

  • Participants will learn how the TRIZ methods were developed in the former USSR and how they are spreading around the world.

  • They will learn to develop an Ideal Final Result for a problem and how to develop solutions for the problem from the IFR

  • They will learn to recognize contradictions within the problem and how to apply the Contradiction Matrix and the 40 Principles of Inovative Problem Solving to resolve contradictions.

  • They will develop a plan for use of TRIZ in their organizations.

Experiential Activities:

On Sunday, participants will learn some of the basic methods of TRIZ, including the IFR, Identification of Resources and 40 Principles of Innovative Problem Solving.

Monday morning, we will take a back-stage tour of Sea World and see how the people who solve both technical and management problems for this exciting scientific and tourist attraction have used the concepts of TRIZ to develop innovative solutions.

Monday afternoon, we will discuss our Sea World discoveries to apply the TRIZ methods when returning to work.

Attendee Take-Aways:

  • Class Notes on each method

  • Contradiction Matrix and 40 Principles of Innovative Problem Solving (approx. 40-pg database)

  • Worksheets for Sea World experience

  • Worksheets for TRIZ applications planning

Summary:

TRIZ is different! It is analytical creativity—creativity when you and your organization need it, not just when the mood is right. Our TRIZ tutorial won’t just teach you about TRIZ, it will teach you to use TRIZ yourself and help others to use it. We’ll enjoy San Diego’s famous Sea World while using it to study innovative problem solving in a complex business environment. You’ll go home with a plan to use TRIZ in YOUR complex environment, to move your organization’s innovation capability to a new level!
