CONFERENCES |
"If You Want to Kill Innovation, Reward It!" Alfie Kohn,
By perceiving that cooperation is the answer, not competition, Alfie Kohn opens a new world of living. I am deeply indebted to him."
The author of six books, including No
Contest: The Case Against Competition, Alfie Kohn has been described
as the country's leading critic of competition, although he is quick to
point out that there is not much competition for that title. Kohn has keynoted conferences across North America and abroad, as well as presenting at such organizations as AT&T;, BMW, Dial, Mattel, NASA, and Pfizer, as well as appearing on "Oprah," "Donahue," and the "Today" show, National Public Radio and the BBC, and more than 200 other TV and radio programs. In 1998, Fortune magazine called him "America's most biting critic of money as motivator." His work on motivational issues in the workplace has been described and debated in such publications as CFO, the Journal of the American Compensation Association, Training, Incentive, the Journal for Quality and Participation, the Washington Post, and on the front page of the Wall Street Journal. His articles include "Why Incentive Plans Cannot Work" in the Harvard Business Review and "Competition Versus Excellence" in The New York Times. His next book, expected in the fall of 1999, is tentatively titled "THE SCHOOLS OUR CHILDREN DESERVE: Moving Beyond Traditional Classrooms and Tougher Standards" (Houghton Mifflin).
