Roger von Oech
Author of A Whack on the Side of the Head
As long as Roger von Oech can remember, he's been interested in ideas
and how people get them. After earning a bachelor's degree from Ohio State
in history and philosophy, and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in the
"History of Ideas," he worked for IBM where he learned two important lessons:
- You can have a great idea, but if you can't sell it, it won't get very far;
- Many people in business develop tunnel-vision and thus miss a lot of
good ideas around them.
In 1977, he started his own company to stimulate creativity and innovation in business. He especially enjoys the diversity of problems and companies with which he gets involved. He's married (his wife Wendy works for his business), and has two children. His hobbies include Masters swimming and collecting old television commercials.
Topic:
Creative Thinking
Presentations are tailored to the client's needs. Past seminars include:
- A television network trying to think up new program ideas
- A greeting card company looking for ways to incorporate high technology into their products
- A computer company interested in decreasing the length of time needed to complete software projects
- A retail chain wanting to get a glimpse of what the "kitchen of the future" will look like
